I went back to my hometown after my business is more or less stable, as I also don’t have to be there physically anymore. I have a brother and sister in law (I will named her as Alice). This topic brings some sad memories.

I had a cousin who was born 10 years before me. He and I were close despite the age gap as we had quite a few things in common chief among which we both could converse in Mandarin as we both have Chinese mums from Singapore.

2 years later they were about to try for a baby again as she was then 37 and her parents were pressuring her to have that baby. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with cancer and he opted to keep his cancer a secret from everyone till one day she came to me, she told me he was having cancer treatment and chemotherapy had basically made him impotent. She said he asked her to come find for me as he was too embarrassed to ask on his own. She came with a letter from him and I asked him if the letter was indeed from him, he confirmed it.

I offered to go through a fertility clinic but she did not want to go through it and instead wanted it to be done and over with so we could all get on with life. I tried to talk them out of it as it was not something I was all that comfortable with and thought they should perhaps adopt instead but her family was adamant that the child must be their own.

She had all kinds of superstitions and believed in all kinds of old wives’ tales. She made me move into her parents’ London flat as at that time I was at uni.

We were quite lucky, we had that discussion on a Friday, that Monday we began doing it and did her 4 times over a span of 9 days. 2 weeks later she tested positive.

He recovered from cancer, overjoyed they were especially her parents because not just did she have a son, that boy looked near 100% like his mum’s dad and on top of that he did not look mixed at al. They named him after my then passed on uncle and he followed the mum’s surname.

Then 2 years later they asked me to help as they would like to have a 2nd child. I initially rejected as she had already turned 40 by then and the risk is a bit high. In the end I agreed but it took 2 months of trying before it happened. They were overjoyed to have a 2nd boy and he was named after our granddad and like the elder brother followed the mum’s surname. She kept her end of the bargain, she had her tubes tied after that and she quit her job to look after both of them.

Unfortunately 7 months into the pregnancy my cousin had a relapse and the cancer had spread to his lungs and brain. He passed away 10 months later.

She kept her end of the bargain, my aunt does get to spend time with them but not too often these days as she is getting up there with age. I refrain from seeing or being close to them.

No. During pregnancy she was extremely cautious especially when the scan showed she was carrying a boy. Therefore no sex at all.

After pregnancy, she was too preoccupied with the baby that everything else including her career took a backseat.
