I began to notice that C would always be picked up by a car driven by a older man who i assume was her father.Almost everyday for the first 3mths this car would be waiting at the carpark near my office building.Then one day the car stopped coming.And about 2wks after that,I came back to the office late one night to drop off some things when I heard someone sobbing in the other cubicle.The office was empty except for one other person in another cubicle and I slowly walked over to where the sobbing sound was.

"C! Are you ok? Why are you crying?"

C looked up at me and her eyes were swollen from crying too much.I quickly went to get some water for her and after a few minutes,she calmed down.She slowly finished the glass of water and looked at me for a few minutes before she finally spoke."I just broke up with my bf" she said,trying hard not to cry."Thank you for the water,but if it's ok with you,I would like to be alone."Since she had stopped crying,I left her alone and went off.

The next day,I didn't see her at work as she had taken urgent leave.As it was Friday,I did not see her until the week after.She didn't reply any of the messages I sent,so I assumed she needed some space.On Monday,I reached the office early after sending my wife off to the airport and I was surprised to see C already in the office doing work.
I didn't want to say anything so I just minded my own business.I think it was about half an hour later that she finally spoke.

C: I'm sorry about last week.Didnt expect to see anyone in the office.

Me: Its ok.Are you feeling better?

C: Yes.

Me: You want to talk about it?

C: During lunch ok?

Me: Sure

It was lunchtime,and we decided to head out away from the usual office makan places.I gave my boss the excuse that C and I needed to run some errands and so we headed towards town area for lunch.After we ordered our food,I finally decided to get to the bottom of the matter.

Me: What happened last week?

C: I broke up with my bf.

Me: Are you ok?

C: Much better now.Sorry I'm still feeling like crap today.

Me: It's ok if you don't want to talk about it.We can always talk another day.

C: I don't have anyone to talk to so this is going to sound very long.

Me: Well we're not going back to the office for the rest of the day so I have all day.

C looked at me for a few minutes before she told me the story.The elderly man in the car was her bf and not her father.She was having an affair with him for almost 2yrs (he's married with kids) and he broke off the relationship after his wife had hired a private detective to follow him.The day I found her crying in the office was the day he had broken off with her.She had spent the weekend hiding at home and refused to do anything other than eat,sleep and watch tv.

Me: Isn't that guy old enough to be your father?

C: Yes

Me: Then what about your parents? Did they find out?

C: My father passed away when I was very young,and my mother left home after placing me with my grandmother.

Me: I'm sorry to hear that.You never told me about your family

C: It's ok.I don't usually talk about them anyway.

Me: Is your grandmother still around?

C: No she passed away some years ago so I've been on my own.

I seem to know what the problem is by now and even though I was hesitating,I decided to ask anyway.

Me: C, don't mind me asking, but why are you with this guy?

C didn't reply and I didn't want to put her under any more pressure so I decided not to ask any more questions.
