‘Foreign Talents’ jailed for sex with underage prostitute

Her clients were mostly ‘Foreign Talent’ Bangladeshi cleaners who paid her amounts ranging from $10 to $100 for a “quicky sex” at staircase landings in the Hougang area.

Although prostitution is not an offence in Singapore, but the fact that the prostitute was only 14-year-old at the material time landed five of her clients in jail – for having sex with an underaged prostitute.

The five accused, who had pleaded guilty earlier, were sentenced by a district court yesterday (20th November) to jail terms ranging from 10 to 17 months.

According to court documents, the underaged prostitute Miss X (who cannot be named as she is a minor), got to know the Bangladeshi cleaners through her parents, who were also cleaners.

Jojnal Jilhaque Khalifa, a foreman of a cleaning crew, paid Miss X $12 to have sex with him late last year. In July this year, he had sex with Miss X’s 14-year-old female friend at a staircase landing for $40.

The 31-year-old told his friends about it and one of them pestered the female friend for sex, resulting in the female friend calling the police.

As a result of the police investigation, the other men who had sex with the underaged Miss X were exposed.

31-year-old Mohammad Karban Abdul Kabir Madbar, also a foreman, had sex with Miss X last December. He paid her $100 but on another occasion that same month, he gave her only $20.

Wasim Rafiq Shek, was on cleaning duty in January this year when Miss X asked him if he was interested in having sex with her.

The 23-year-old was about to finish work and took her to a hotel in Geylang Lorong 10 for sex and paid Miss X $20.

In that same month, Miss X walked up to 31-year-old Sharif Patwari, and asked him for $10. He refused but, at her suggestion, they had sex at a staircase landing, after which he handed her $10.

His friend, 29-year-old Delowar Abdul Khaleque Madbor, who did cleaning for a renovation company, also had sex with Miss X early this year.

For having sex with both minors (Miss X and her 14-year-old female friend), Jojnal was jailed for 14 months.

Wasim, the youngest among the five, was jailed for 10 months while the remaining three were jailed for 12 months.

Delowar was also jailed an additional five months and received six strokes of the cane for entering Singapore illegally, the sentence to run consecutively. He will serve a total of 17 months behind bars.

During sentencing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Wynn Wong said a jail term of between 10 months and a year was the norm for offenders who pleaded guilty to exploiting a young and vulnerable victim.

Another accused facing the same charge, not from the above group of five, Mohammad Easak Amir Uddin had claimed trial last month and was convicted and sentenced to 15 months’ jail after a four-day trial.

Miss X, who is now 15-year-old, is being cared for at the Pertapis Centre for Women and Girls.

* Anyone convicted of obtaining the sexual services of a person below 18 years of age can be jailed for up to seven years or fined up to $10,000, or sentenced to both.
