SINGAPORE — A total of 99 women, aged between 22 and 43, have been arrested for their suspected involvement in vice-related activities, the police said in a statement on Monday (June 19).

The four-day operation, which ended on June 15, saw police officers raiding multiple locations islandwide, including hotels and residential units at Geylang, Serangoon Road, Balestier Road, and Woodlands.

TODAY understands that the 99 women are from China and Thailand.

Police investigations are still ongoing.

Any house owners who rent their premises to any person for vice-related activities will be prosecuted and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding S$3,000 or jailed not exceeding three years or to both.

Subsequent convictions can see fines not exceeding S$10,000, or an imprisonment not exceeding five years, or to both.

For discussion sake, when you rent out your apartment, I think it is reasonable to assume that your tenants are using it for residential purposes. You can't possibly ask them if they will be turning it into a brothel. And even if you do ask, I don't think anyone will say "Yes, it will become a brothel, do come and visit when you have time."

So I'm not sure how they will be able to prove that you knowingly and intentionally rent your house out for illegal purposes, not just vice but it could be for drugs, gambling etc.

Do they expect landlords to conduct spot-checks?

Quite hard for hotels to spot check, their place is meant for foreigners to stay in

They do expect landlord to conduct checks. But as to how to conduct, is another question altogether. Tenancy agreement have a clause that if landllord wished to visit the unit, need to make prior appointment. If do unexpected spot check, that is breeching the peace of the tenant and that will consitute breeching of rental contract. So do you think tenant doing vice will let landlord see them engaging in vice activity? Only way to convict a person under that law, is the stupidity of the person admitting it himself.

Yes you right on this . But a landlord have the right to spot check if he/she suspect that something is not right . It will be worse if the landlord chooses to ignore what is the obvious. For foreigners to stay in hbd flat they need to have valid work permit .

OF cos they have the right. Standing outside door and see, or use key to go in and see? Both also consider spot check. First one, you can't see much. 2nd option, you will be charged for illegal trespass even if it is your own residential.

The first option could enough already . If you see many dirty old men entering the flat you will already know the answer. :p

I think it will take a very paranoid landlord to camp outside to spy on his tenants. Why would anyone even think of doing that?

In fact, it is much easier for the hotel to find out vice activities than the house owners. Think about that: a single PRC/Thai lady books a room for whole month long, everyday got dozen of men entering the room, requesting 10-20 towels everyday... you think the management doesn't know what is going on inside that room? Some more there are CCTV setup everywhere along the corridors, the receptionist can also simply notice that. The hotel management just keeping their one eye closed to continue earning those... what's the word, immoral incomes? :p
