Is bigamy allowed in Singapore?
 

A friend in Singapore showed me an obituary in the Singapore Straits Times today (19-July-2010) - on page 33. There's a guy who passed away - he had 2 wives.

I'm really puzzled.

After 15 Sep 1961 it is no longer allowed with the passing of the Women's Charter.

Then again, u can have many in china. ppl dun care about how many wives u have as long u have money

That guy is not old. He was only 44 years old when he passed away. How come he got 2 wives legally?

possible he married both, but he was caught probably paid a heavy fine.

He could have abandon one and married another, without officially divorcing another. These would be during the days of none computerized records.

It is about time we suggest this to our government :D .... and both wifey must give birth to 1 kids at least (unless unbearable) :rolleyes:

Just because the papers state that he had 2 wives does not mean that he really had 2. One maybe unregistered and have an arrangement or so.

Maybe his a pr turn citizen??? His already married in some part of asia that's allowed? Anyway I think the ex wife theory is highly possible

Even customary marriage without registration is not allowed by sg law, I believe.

Since we're on this topic, other than becuming a muslim (and move to an arab country), how can I "legally" have more than one wife? Anyone? :D

Apparently Chinese Singaporean. Not sure if he's muslim or not, but I don't think he is muslim.

Simple. One was divorced. And perhaps "taken back" into the family. 上有政策下有对策。
